for those of you on the fence, like i was, let me tell you that this isn't radically different. it's the same thing, more or less, but longer, much longer. if you're Snyder-agnostic like i am, this won't sway you either way, i don't think. the most interesting thing about this movie is the aspect ratio; rarely do folks think about aspect ratios and i appreciate that the film is forcing folks to contend with how different aspect ratios do different things.

Here are some positive things I can say about this extremely dumb, very bad movie:
    - Pedro Pascal's performance was a delight. Very jazzy, very sincere without being hammy. If the film had been made in the 80s, I could imagine Max Lord being played by Michael Moriarty.
    - Chris Pine is an incredible actor. I think he's one of the best working today but because he's broadly handsome, he ends up doing these kinds of movies.
    - The scene…

what i like about horror films is not their commitment to realism or even gestures towards realism. what i like is that each horror film is its own self-contained universe, each one looking like ours but isn't. the universe of Sledgehammer, like most horror films, is slightly askew, askance, its laws of physics and logic just not quite right. not necessarily dreamlike, though that is the easiest comparison. no, rather, a better explanation is an example. in Time Out of…

My favourite part is that 455 years in the future and the fashion is still in the 2000s. all the girls are wearing crop tops and those weird pants Britney Spears wore all the time

super fun and has a great sense of humour about itself. is it scary? fuck no, but how often are slashers scary?

  • Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday

    ★★★

There's two major obstacles for a viewer before they can say they enjoy this movie: 1) the acting and 2) the screenplay's structure. a clear protagonist doesn't emerge from this miasma until about the halfway point. the viewer might assume that mysterious bounty hunter Creighton Duke is the protagonist but he spends half the film in jail making crazy eyes at people. the viewer might also assume Diana, the diner waitress, is the protagonist but she dies at about the…

watched the new remastered blu-ray packaged with the UHD disc. i don't have a 4k player or tv, but i am buying 4k blu-rays in preparation for when i can enjoy them. it looks incredible; although, white people of my generation would probably prefer to watch VHS dubs for the nostalgia factor. nice to see reference quality audio/video for once though.

the thing that struck me the most this time around is the Ozu-like moments between scenes. there's a really…

got the new bare bones blu ray from Paramount and it looks fine. the subtitles are perfect, which i know doesn't seem like a big deal, but it matters to me. i thought that i had forgotten everything about this movie beyond the premise, but i either figured out the major twist halfway or i remembered it. if you've read a single Raymond Chandler or Ross MacDonald (highly recommend both), you'll guess the major revelation around the same time i…

I'm not going to the theatre any time soon and I honestly don't think you should either unless you live in a country that's absolutely flattened the curve. I don't think any movie is worth risking your life. You'd think that lockdown and COVID would generally have increased my viewing habits, but that's not the case. I've found 2020 to be an incredibly difficult year (ie my mother died, I was laid off, school cancelled my program for the foreseeable…

Brigette Lundy-Paine's interpretation of Keanu Reeves is so perfect because it's not simple affectionate mimicry nor simple mockery, but instead a textured reworking of his movements and sounds. It's the best part of the movie and I wish the film had had more time for the daughters. Also dope that Lundy-Paine is nonbinary and uses they-them pronouns, making this yet another movie where Keanu has worked with an enby!

watched the Blue Underground 4K restoration on blu-ray. looks fantastic. looks probably better than the prints that were originally shown in theatres, which brings up an interesting dilemma about genre restoration....

anyway, i hadn't seen the movie since I owned the old Anchor Bay clamshell case VHS and it's pretty good. not quite as dreamy as Fulci's later horror movies but committed the same kind of gross out gags he's known for

i was very very distracted by actor Ian…
