Ideas Man is a genuinely important work that perfectly distils the chan culture of the late 00s to mid 10s, a culture which would later influence general online discourse in an extremely profound way which nobody seems to fully appreciate.
It’s vulgar, DIY, anarchic, angry, misanthropic, nihilistic, absurdist, iconoclastic, borderline racist and buried under about 17 layers of irony. But I truly believe it’s something that the cultural historians of the future would be foolish not to take very seriously.
It’s also hilarious and has a spectacular soundtrack.

There’s a lot to like here (not least Kubrick’s cinematography and the incredible performances from Duvall and Nicholson) but I do find the film to be mostly lacking in suspense. Jack’s “descent” into madness isn’t a descent as much as it is the flicking of a switch, and barely that. He seems only a tiny provocation away from tearing off his son’s face in only his first or second scene, and the film has barely gotten…
