The Shining

The Shining ★★★½

(UK version, 119 mins)

There’s a lot to like here (not least Kubrick’s cinematography and the incredible performances from Duvall and Nicholson) but I do find the film to be mostly lacking in suspense. Jack’s “descent” into madness isn’t a descent as much as it is the flicking of a switch, and barely that. He seems only a tiny provocation away from tearing off his son’s face in only his first or second scene, and the film has barely gotten going by the time we see his famous deranged glare. The stylish visuals and wonderful performances keep The Shining compelling and arguably even essential viewing but it’s let down by the screenplay in my opinion.
