I'm not usually into historical period dramas so going to watch a film set in 1700's Britain and focusing on Queen Anne is a bit of an odd choice for me. However, having seen a couple of clips as well as one of the director's previous films Dogtooth I knew this wasn't going to be a typical entry into the genre.
The film tells of a power struggle/love triangle between Queen Anne and two female members of her court. This in itself would be a different approach to this sort of film but it is also funny, rude, and sweary. Visually it's also very interesting; all candle light and fisheye lenses.
The film wont be to everyone's taste, but I liked it. The only downside is that it is one of those films where the ending isn't readily apparent and when it does come is quite abrupt. Since the film is split into chapters I think it might have benefited from a title card to say something like "....a tale in X chapters".
