6/10. War of the Worlds (2005) is a science fiction thriller directed by Steven Spielberg which stars Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins, Justin Chatwin and Miranda Otto. Ray Ferrier is a divorced dockworker and less-than-perfect father. Soon after his ex-wife and her new husband drop off his teenage son and young daughter for a rare weekend visit, a strange and powerful lightning storm touches down.

Steven Spielberg's post-9/11, action-loaded H.G. Wells adaptation is partially suspenseful, but lacks heart and coherence. It sure is entertaining on a surface level, but beneath that, there is relatively little substance to engage with. Found it to be rather generic, formulaic, and predictable. Plus, the characters were super uninteresting, the CGI (obviously) has not aged well, and Spielberg's direction as well as Williams' overkill-score seemed a little pushy and overpowering at times. Oh, and then there is something else... "Scary Movie 4" kind of ruined the film for me and made many scenes appear unwillingly comedic. Often struggled to took it seriously, but this is not primarily a problem on part of the film, of course. Overall, a solid one. Enjoyable, but bland and highly forgetabble. Ranks amongst my least favorite Spielberg films.
