Movies can live inside you. By which I mean, the really important ones that reverberate with you on a spiritual, molecular level, take on a whole new life that transcends subtext, political reading or even groundbreaking aesthetic iconography. I’ve just begun my 5th decade spent consciously obsessing over film and precious few movies I’ve watched in that interim have been as diligently studied and wholeheartedly embraced by yours truly as Tobe Hooper’s seminal masterwork from 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. …

Big old dumb daydreams. My deluded shrink leading me to my revelations. Have I been wasting all this time before I really started wasting all my time? Home alone except I’m never alone. Surrounded and suffocated at every turn and turning into a fat, pointless old man with a lot of lines all over my face.

I was a pointless boy before I became a pointless man. A boring redundancy with two balls that have since been silenced. Nothing more…

I had a revelation, boys. Just now, watching this, sitting in my home theater with the Atmos cranked to deafening levels, tears brimming in my eyes for the entirety of the last 40 minutes.

I’ve been witheringly watching of late while many on letterboxd have taken the release of Old as a dictate to revisit and exalt what I consider to be M Night Shyamalan’s world endingly abysmal filmography. I’ve stopped myself over and again from making snide, dismissive comments…

Well this was a hell of a thing. It takes a bit too long to get going proper, but once it does, Blood Red Sky becomes a pretty goddamn harrowing slice of Murphy’s Law horror. It’s beyond impressive to watch how organically things fall apart in this impossibly volatile situation. How dire and apocalyptically violent it all gets. But perhaps most surprising is how emotionally affecting the whole experience ends up being. Was definitely not expecting that when I pressed…

I’ve been feeling pretty sour of late about Bezos and Branson’s dipshit Disney rides to the edge of the atmosphere and back. I’ve been furious contemplating it being a harbinger of a future where billionaires use their obscene resources not to help their fellow man, but for building lifeboats off this dying planet, leaving us all to cook in the baking sun as we’re ravaged with disease and beset by roving gangs of fascist cannibals.

    Then, my old pal Classic…

Quite possibly the single most entertaining movie ever made. Just a traffic jam of movie stars and legendary character actors having the most fun thespians can possibly have in front of a camera. Ritchie stages the film as an unceasing unfolding of bravura set pieces, all hilariously bleeding into one another like a cinematic centipede of effortless cool.

It’s been probably 10-15 years since I last saw this. After Wrath of Man kicked my ass all over the home theater…
