“It's the survival of the human race, Plissken. Something you don't give a shit about.”
mmhhh this aged like fine wine. fuck the police state indeed! mid-tier Carpenter for me but absolutely fucks because a) brooding dystopian new york, its streets a lived-in wasteland ruled by anarchy and b) mans kurt russell fine as hell with an eye patch and giving a great physical performance. snake plissken is just about the coolest dude in the whole corp of protagonists from Carpenter’s body of work.
i hear Leigh Whannell is set to helm a remake of this, very excited to see where that goes! lots of promise to take the narrative further, considering how punched up this already banger setting can get with the means of today. on the other hand it’s such a distinct product of its time and director too; a futuristic western ringing in a whole decade of like-minded, dark sci-fi films rooted in the decay of modernism and its urban industrial complex. remains to be seen how an updated take on that can actually hold up but yes i’m ready!!
