Naman Gidwani’s review published on Letterboxd:
"They’re faster, they’re smarter, they’re organised.”
“This is they’re kingdom.”
They’re ‘living’, they’re having babies, they’re fornicating? Presumably. What are WE really doing. Flippin' krabbie patties?
"You don't see them fucking each other over."
Army of the Dead is an absolute treat. It's a zombie movie, but still feels fresh, it's a heist movie, but still feels fresh. It's all these tropes and done-befores on top of each other in the inimitable Zack Snyder way.
For his fans however, it's much more cathartic. To see the Stone Quarry logo open the movie, is nothing less than therapy. Did you spot the Larry Fong easter egg? Or notice that the song in the opening credits features 'Allison Crowe'? The beautiful voice that also performed Hallelujah in Zack Snyder's Justice League.
He used the same dream lens in JL's Knightmare scene that he shot this whole movie with. Coming to which, the shots look stunning. The shallow depth of field, the unfocused zooms and shakes, just a camera on Snyder's shoulders following the actors around. While the lens used can get a little tiring to look at times, it never bothered me. Infact, I believe it creates something truly unique and beautiful to look at.
The cast is so great. Everyone is interesting and a joy to watch. Tig Notaro is a delight. Dave is subtly awesome. And I can't wait for the Army of Thieves spin-off with Matthias.
Netflix has gone all in on Snyder and I'm here for it.
