    The Big Lebowski


    Its more cultish fans almost make me want to mark down The Big Lebowksi - but it’s a wonderful film. So bold in its of use of music, surreal sequences, framing device and so on.
    And of course it’s genuinely very funny - and doesn’t have the slight over wryness I find in some Coen Brothers films. Also, we love Julianne Moore - and the rest of the performances are famously brilliant, particularly Jeff Bridges.

    Gotta love Fernando Rey. Effective New York grime-crime drama, interesting as much for its portrait of a decaying city as for its fun but reasonably standard plotting.

    Wonderfully creepy, wonderfully strange. A sense of deep malaise and a lovely, haunting final sequence. Superb surreal sequences too.

    Pretty virtuosic. A wonderful portrait of a neighbourhood, animated by a constant babbling soundtrack, Dutch angles, showy dolly shots, fish eye lenses, and dialogue upon dialogue. There’s a compelling energy to the Bed Stuy that emerges. But of course it’s a tragic film too. And it’s hard to pin down where exactly it sits - the coda, which presents violent and non-violent responses to racism seems to allude to an undetermined conclusion, or maybe just a complexity which eludes simple…
