I watched this again for the first time in a very long time, expecting I'd find it disappointing now. I mean, almost all action films look a bit like this now and, well, it's been decades since that initial thrill of seeing Chow Yun Fat use two guns at once for the first time and, well, John Woo's just not very cool any more and...
...turns out none of that matters a damn. I think I enjoyed it as much now as I ever have done because it's just a fucking great movie. It's a little raw compared with some of what followed from Woo but that rawness only adds to its power; and what power it has! The first rate cast - Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung both delivering breakout performances, Ti Lung reinventing himself spectacularly - have an incredible chemistry, the plot is flawlessly structured, the emotional beats all hit hard and the action is years ahead of its time. It still looks and feels stunning.
It's rare that such an influential movie holds up after so long of being ripped off but A Better Tomorrow is pretty much perfect.
