Ian West’s review published on Letterboxd:
I watched this last week and liked it, I thought it was super solid but was actually pretty disappointed because I thought I would love it. Turns out I couldn’t stop thinking about it either, so I’m happy to report that I do in fact love this movie—the camerawork I poo-poo’d the first time around really grew on me... I think it actually works in spades here, the cast is way more likable than I gave it credit for, the new lore is interesting, and the viscera of shit like that .50 cal body pulverization scene owns.
This is exactly what I want out of a sub genre thats more or less spent the last 10 years bloviating the people are the real monsters message to no end with over serious overtones and drab reprocessing of the same ideas—this manages to mix a Romero mentality with Cameron actioneer sensibilities and it’s fun as hell.
Im glad I gave this another chance, now it’s one of my favorite movies of the year?
What a difference a few days can make.
