While I had a really good time with this film, I am just a tiny bit disappointed to be honest! And that’s not to say it was a bad film, I just don’t think it was as amazing as it could’ve been! I love Zack Snyder a lot and am so happy that he got to make this film as you can tell his heart is in every frame! So for Snyder fanatics, I think this will go down a treat!
I do think that the majority of the cast do a great job! Dave Bautista was obviously an excellent choice for the “main character”! He’s just got such an action movie persona about him and he does play a really great character who’s written really well! I thought Ella Purnell was actually a stand out of the cast! I think it’s tied between her and Bautista as to who’s the main character but by the end it feels like her film! If they do a sequel then I hope she’s the focus of it! Omari Hardwick has some great moments, especially towards the end! Nora Arnezeder was actually my favourite character! She was so badass and smart as she was the only one that knew what she was doing! I also really liked Tig Notaro who actually filmed all these scenes separately from the rest of the cast and I honestly didn’t notice! But surprisingly, I didn’t care for Matthias Schweighofer’s character at all! I didn’t find him to be funny or interesting, I actually found him quite annoying! And I know there’s a prequel series coming out based on his character which now I have mixed feelings about! The rest of the cast are fine they’re just not that interesting! But I think a main problem is that I didn’t really care about the majority of the characters because we spend very little time getting to know them! I think there were perhaps maybe too many characters! I really liked the zombies, their movement was so cool and I like the idea of them being advanced! Valentine the zombie tiger was a highlight of the film! Everything is so gory which is brilliant! There’s actually very little action which I was surprised about and kind of disappointed with! I just expected a bit more to be honest! But the last forty minutes are absolutely incredible! They were exhilarating and left me on the edge of my seat! I wish there had been more moments like that! Nevertheless though, it’s still a lot of fun that I can see many people enjoying!
Overall, Army of the Dead may not be one of Zack Snyder’s best films but there are many amazing moments and some strong characters! The story is also fun and well written and sometimes it takes it up to an 11! I see greater potential for a sequel!
