I do not like early PTA anymore

I don't get the hate! Based on a true story might be a little predictable and not the most innovative film out there but there is still a lot to like. Two very good lead performances, a great score by Alexandre Desplat, a fun script and proficient direction. I am a sucker for well crafted pulpy psychological thrillers so this was definitely up my alley.
Sadly, I suspect that the harsh critical judgement has more to do with the director than with anything actually in the film...
This is the fifth film by French director Louis Malle I have seen so far and while I more or less liked all of them, I can definitely not say the same for Damage.
