I just adored how this film blended language and sound to put the audience directly into Ruben's shoes at any given moment -- as an audience member you understand exactly the same amount of communication that Ruben does, as you watch him learn and grow in his ability to communicate using ASL. At first he doesn't speak any ASL so we don't see subtitles (he doesn't understand, so we don't understand), then he becomes more fluent and subtitles begin to appear (we grow with him). Maybe it's just because I'm a nerdy language teacher obsessed with linguistics, but this movie was fuckin cool.
