Suicide Squad nutshell review: unadulterated codswallop!
I can't remember the last time I went to opening night. While due to serendipity rather than enthusiasm I'll admit I was quite enticed by the prospect of seeing this on the big screen. I liked the tone of the previews, the cast looked great and David Ayers shows potential.
While entertaining, the movie is a real mess. The kitchen sink mentality, plethora of, mainly useless, characters and bottom of the barrel story is a hotchpotch of one liners and rushed scenes combinating in a shoddily realised showdown against a half-baked baddie.
I liked the look, costuming and make-up work. Jared Leto's Joker was cool but he doesn’t have nearly enough screen time to let the character breathe, let alone to do anything remotely interesting. I enjoyed seeing Big Willy, who's still got screen presence even while in Hancock mode and Margot Robbie pulls some good faces. Jai Courtney almost won me over… nah!
Still, this is high trash, I'd hoped for a Guardians of the Galaxy super rush, what I got was a Terminator Genisys sinking feeling. While not a Sabotage style monumental failure and worth checking out just for the spectacle, David Ayer needs to chiggity-check himself before he wriggity-wreck's himself. Put that in your pipe!
