    You’re sweet
    But weird
You’re not as weird as you think you are

Peak Texas and peak 80’s in the same strange stylish package. I had never heard of this movie before and I had almost no expectations, but it was way better than I expected. Everyone gives good performances, even bit parts like the interviewees in the shopping mall or the partying kids on the beach.

When the (unintentionally?) sped up version of Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell kicked in…

This is a movie that I got on DVD from a bargin bin at a Mexican grocery store years ago. I know almost no Spanish(except that muerte means “death”, which is why I picked this) but it’s a weirdly compelling and entertaining film regardless.

The plot seems to be about two brothers, Daniel Falcon(Gilberto Trujillo) and Raul Falcon(Raul Trujillo), who live an idyllic life dirtbiking on their ranch. Their father gets murdered during a dispute at a card game, so…

I only learned of this movie for the first time this year, and it quickly became a holy grail that (the print is apparently available for viewing at UCLA Film & Television Archive, so maybe I could have popped in there if I visited LA and I really wanted to see this). The trailer promised a sort of exciting rural revenge flick like Rolling Thunder or Jonathan Demme's Fighting Mad.

But I got my hands on the rip that's been floating…

This film was a flop in 1995 and doesn't have a great reputation, so call me crazy but I thought this was pretty good! It starts off with a dated but visually interesting opening credits sequence with a dragon moving over a man's body. And the opening action(of Mark Dascascos taking out some goons in a Canadian forest) looks great. From there it's messy plot about Yakuza clans that is a bit hard to follow, but not essential to enjoying…

Abel Ferrera is a name I've heard countless times, but I've never seen a single one of his films. But I head that this was a film film about a crime lord becoming obsessed with funding a municipal hospital and it seemed like the coolest thing in the world. But it turns out that part of the plot takes a backseat to the gangster action, but it's entertaining gangster action that kept my eyes on the screen the whole time,…

I first heard of this movie from the episode of the Blank Check podcast about Halloween, where Alex Ross Perry described this film as being about "a man who turns into a chicken". ARP's description turned out to be a bit inaccurate when I tracked down this film and it turns out he turns into a turkey instead; but that made me decide to keep it on hand for this year's Thanksgiving instead.

And boy howdy, this movie is pretty…
