The Edge of Seventeen ★★★★½

I love that the fundamental thesis of this film embodies the line of dialogue saying that everyone is miserable, but some are just better at hiding it. It's a tough idea to think about; it's actually played off as a cynical joke mid-way through the film, but it's a valuable truth. So many of these teen coming-of-age films have their heads in the clouds and assert that life will adjust to you, when in reality the exact opposite is true. It's all about perspective and attitude, and that shift in Nadine's reality is evident and sharp. I really, really love this film. It's honest and real; simultaneously sympathizing with her struggles and maligning her behavior at the same time. Bravo, Kelly Craig, for making a teen film with insights that are actually valuable.
