Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★½

Would love to see this with a far more modest budget; the expensive prestige on display here sands away any real grit or texture of the source material.  Even Viola Davis’ performance feels carefully calculated and affected to chew away all scenery, making way for a shiny golden statue.  Anyway, I’d much rather watch Lover’s Rock for the 4th time than endure this again.  Chadwick Boseman innocent, though his performance in Da Five Bloods was far more mystifying and timeless in its power than what he did here.
