    Mortal Kombat

This was a rough one. Mortal Kombat seems allergic to its few interesting components and entirely too self conscious to be any real fun. The action is sloppy, the script lands with a thud and the gore feels like a cheap parlour trick meant to distract you from the flaws but is deployed far too sporadically to be effective.

Sonya should have been the main character and even then I wouldn’t recommend this mess. Fatally bad.

    Godzilla vs. Kong

Wild to me how much of a debt this film owes to Paul W. S. Anderson’s body of work. But unlike Anderson it takes so many fantastical concepts and systemically grinds them into a dull dust over a bloated cast and runtime. The action occasionally hints at a more interesting film but it’s quickly pulled back down by a script that feels like an AI wrote action humans A through D.

I said in my King of Monsters review that it’s an impressive feat to make ideas such as these boring and here they’ve managed to blow me away once again.

Pretty torn on this one because some parts of this monstrosity were incredibly cool, moving and exactly my shit. Others, notably the hero action montages, numbed me better than my incredibly gentle dentist.

    Raya and the Last Dragon

A whole lot of movie packed into a very chased runtime but its heart is strong. Kelly Marie Tran is an absolute star and plays off the rest of the cast brilliantly. Raya is a compelling Disney Princess with moments of proper ambiguity for her character and the lore built around her story is worthy of an animated series or at least a sequel

The film is also just damn gorgeous to look at with a rousing score and a climax that moved me to tears with its unabashed hopefulness.
