No Retreat, No Surrender 3: Blood Brothers

    ★★★

The original NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER is one of my favorite and most rewatched not-guilty pleasures, and its first (unrelated) sequel is a fun time. This third also unrelated one is not nearly on their level, but I always enjoy a shitty early '90s English language international co-production martial arts b-movie with decent choreography.

(Warning: some misogynistic and homophobic bits among the otherwise enjoyable tough guy preposterousness).

This TV movie has a Basil Poledouris score and is edited by Dean Cundey, and a pretty new Madeleine Stowe is very likable as the lead. It's also the last movie to feature Tamara Dobson (CLEOPATRA JONES herself) and she's really cool in it, if underutilized. But by the end I felt it was way more of a reflection of men fearing women than a commentary on it.

I mean, it's Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa fighting giant monsters together. For a bit it's straight up video game HELL IN THE PACIFIC. So obviously I dug it. I hope they make at least five more.

Yes, Bernard CANDYMAN Rose directed a Japanese-language samurai film. It's about a lord making his samurai run a 36-mile foot race to toughen them up, and the way various characters try to use this opportunity to achieve their dreams. I'll admit it: the way the different stories and the emotional arcs and the action *and the sporting event* all come together at the same time straight up made the tears start pouring. Other reviews seem pretty mixed, so maybe I'm a weirdo, but I think this movie is straight up beautiful. Maybe my favorite of last year.
