Owen Johnson’s review published on Letterboxd:
I don't think a film feels as right as a stage show for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, but there's a lot of things I admire in this film. Firstly, and it's been said a million times before, but Chadwick Boseman is so good in this. He is genuinely fantastic, and as much as this feels like a very biased opinion (for unfortunately obvious reasons) I really think he deserves the academy award this year.
The camerawork is masterful as well, the movement in out and around characters, up stairs, down stairs and tracking through the streets fits so well with the overarching theatrical style.
I can only see this being Boseman, Lyndo, Oldman, Ahmed's fight, and whilst the winner isn't clear, Boseman's shoes definitely look the cleanest.
