Fun, dumb and tactically serviceable. Butler keeps his performance subdued for most of the film while also managing to have a consistent accent this time around, which is commendable. Grillo rocks a man bun and does some sad boi Desperado shit. Louder is a great Neo-Western badass and Huss hams it up as the delightfully psychotic Anthony Lamb. Violent as hell and mostly rewarding. Would get more stars for less CGI flames. Just blow shit up for real guys, it's okay.

Super strong sequel with keen direction and some truly gorgeous cinematography. It's also pretty wild that Toby Kebbell's CG sneer as Koba (aka Caesar's Judas, aka Not An Ape) makes for a more terrifying and emotionally complex villain than pretty much anything offered up by the last decade of sub-par blockbuster slop (with a handful of rare exceptions).

Even with Franco's grime all over it, this film still manages to be one of the best IP reboot/adaptations in recent memory, not to mention a completely enthralling synthesis of character drama and action cinema in its own right. Caesar and his primate brethren are given so much pathos and emotional intelligence that it's impossible not to root for them, especially when the human characters are all portrayed as either willfully inept, morally bankrupt or both. Apes together strong, indeed.

Is there anything that more embodies that turn of the millenium, post-Y2K triumph of The Year of Our Lord 2001, than a bunch of steamy-eyed, muscle-bound rev-heads cruising around in suped-up Honda Civics, listening to Ja Rule, drinking Coronas and trying to get that all-time, life-changing score of DVD players?
