You're sixteen and the hero of your story. At sixteen, you haven't quite figured out that each and everyone of us is the hero of our own story.

Here's sixteen-year-old, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) and she's an intelligent, bright, university-bound student who also loves French films and jazz and art and classical music. One rainy day, an older man named David (Peter Sarsgaard) pulls his car up alongside her and offers to give her cello a lift because of course, she…

How have I not seen this film before? How?

Cléo (Corinne Marchand) is waiting on cancer biopsy test results. For two consecutive hours, she waits.

I have been in this position, albeit not for cancer. I have been stuck waiting for the scary test results where your options are probably at best, something that is going to put you through hell and turn your life upside down for an indefinite period of time or at worst, will kill you. And…

Why have I waited so long to see this?

32 years and America is not much better. Maybe it's worse?

Really well done. The film itself looks like it was made today (speaking of it cinematically here).

This was on a couple of lists of film noirs, but I'm not sure it belongs in the genre although there are definitely some noir elements. What it is, however, is an absolutely gorgeous film about the demimonde. Simone Signoret and Serge Reggiani take one look at each other and it's over. Even though both of their world weary characters know damn well it means trouble, they're hooked. Come to think of it, maybe it is a film noir after all.

Sometimes you watch a film and now you get why it's on all the lists. M is such a film.

I don't have a lot to say about it because I am 100% positive that it's all been said so much better. I will say the mood is fantastic. Peter Lorre is creepy AF. But I'm going to do what I have done before and link to
ScreeningNotes' review because it says so eloquently what I cannot.

Years ago, I was in my car driving on a long road trip and listening to Talk of the Nation (I think) and they were talking about the TV show ER. Someone called in and the talk turned to how there was a totally different energy and vibe to people who are out and about during the night. That's stuck with me for years because it was borne out by crappy supermarket jobs.

    That's what's happening in After Hours to…
