Pedro’s review published on Letterboxd:
The favorite is the most controlled film that yorgos lanthimos has made so far. He had already done 'The Lobster' and 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer', two films with a more bizarre and macabre footprint.
What stands out in 'The Favorite' are the performances of the main trio. Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman are excellent in their respective roles. The manipulation game between Rachel weisz and Emma Stone is sensational and yields the best scenes from the film. The two go to great lengths to please the queen and be yours to become her favorite, I am not exaggerating to say that they go to great lengths to please the queen. Both are excellent in the film, but the best performance is Olivia colman. In one scene she looks like a spoiled 5-year-old child, and a few minutes later he freaks out and goes crazy with a band playing on the palace lawn, all without looking forced or cartoonish. I haven't seen 'The Wife' with Glenn Close, many people say she deserved more than Colman, his acting has to be unbelievable to get close to Olivia Colman. She won and deserved the Oscar (2019).
I can see all the qualities of 'the favorite', there are many qualities. However, I also can't deny that I finished watching this movie with no emotion. I liked the performances, the direction, the costumes, the art direction and everything, but something was missing to make me like the film more, something was missing, some scene, moment or memorable dialogue was missing that would make me watch the film again.
Respect my story, I am still the largest in this palace.
That was my interpretation of the end of the film. Those who watched will understand.
