Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★★

It is literally fabulous how using the expectation of historic fact elevates normal, dramatic suspension of disbelief into absolute faith of how something will turn out. Because that sets up the most powerful one-two punch/tablecloth trick I have ever experienced in a movie theater.

On second viewing, that feeling of dread is removed and so is some of the drama. In a way, it is kind of a trick, because it's not really character-based dramatic expectation, but more circumstance-based - which one could argue diminishes the long term power of the story. But I won't be the one to argue that (after all, it is the characters that make this shift believably occur.)

You see, what's wonderful about it is that this film is filled to the brim with joy, beauty, comedy, angst and love for humanity. If that sounds a little hifalutin, well, it is an ambitious film. But thank God for that! And thank QT for giving me something I will be able to enjoy for many years to come. I won't outline the details of what I loved because surely everyone who sees this movie will have a different list of what they appreciate. But It's obviously not just the twist that makes this movie really work. It really is a gorgeous and emotionally honest work of art.

I have no idea if what I say here makes any sense, but I am just putting it all down so I can remember what I was thinking at the time. If you get anything from this little review, well then just go ahead and see the movie and decide for yourself. If you've already seen it, you already know what you think. I'm sure you are right, whoever you are. It isn't for everyone. But for people of my generation, well, it turned back the hands of time and made everything ok for a couple-three hours. I'm deeply grateful. By the way, if someone ruins this film for you, I am sorry. I hope it won't be me. I think it's possible you are going to need that initial thrill for the doors of glory to open up. So maybe that makes this film less than perfect for all. But it was perfect for me. FIVE STARS.

One last word, it's all fiction. So please don't take it as anything else. That is the point.
