Ian’s review published on Letterboxd:
The biggest disappoint of the year and easily Snyder's worst film. Before this his animated owl movie was the only one I didn't love but even that was beautiful visually. Snyder's movies are always beautiful visually no matter which DP he works with but he acts as his own here and it's shockingly ugly especially with the shots being constantly out of focus. Please Zack don't feel like you need to do it all yourself even the most talented visual filmmakers like Terrence Malick have never shot their own films! It's also far too bloated and overlong for what it is and should not have been over 2 hours long. Aside from a fun 10 minute introduction Army of the Dead takes about an hour to really get going and all this setup takes too long for characters that are overall pretty forgettable! Zack Snyder's Justice League was 4 hours long but felt shorter than this because it was paced so well! What action there is here is fun but it feels like such a small portion of the runtime and again compared to the action Snyder’s done before it's still pretty lackluster. I'm shocked people are saying this is Snyder’s best film since Dawn of the Dead (a far superior zombie film!) because it really isn't. Looking at reviews on here from people like Patrick Willems just tells me people like to mock Snyder when he aspires to do greater and are happier when he just sticks to dumb stuff like this.
