This movie is interesting for a number of reasons but the most complicated of all seems to be the DNA of inspirations for it. In some ways this is almost birthed by an algorithm of recent spy movies.

There's a little trend in movie marketing that seems to be edgy covers of alternative songs, something that seemed to start with the cover version of Radiohead's "Creep" in the trailer for Social Network. One of the best trailers for a movie…

The book is great fun and the movie is incredibly loyal to the source material... well, maybe not with all of the casting. I watched this as part of my review of the movies of five years ago, and The Martian is one of the most re-watched and repeatedly enjoyed movies of 2015. It was an incredibly fun year of movies, stuffed with a great batch of spy movies. 2020 was also the year that I finally caught up with the rest of the world in loving Mad Max: Fury Road, I was originally luke warm on it and now I'm a believer.

I think this kind of runs into the problem of being so much of a cult movie that it gets lost how incredibly well made this is and how perfect the writing is. Oddly, while nihilists are considered villains of the film, yet the viewpoint is groundbreaking in that the file. is named after the other Lebowski, the Dude is the character whose story we see the most of, yet Donnie is the main character. One of the first images…

Ahh, so this is why I sometimes go through a director's filmography. Paul Verhoeven tells a wild WWII of the Dutch resistance and a Jewish woman stuck in the middle trying to survive. Very well acted, the story is epic, and the context that it is told through one big flashback puts such an interesting perspective on how the main character's trauma affected her for a lifetime.

This sets itself apart in the MI series of movies through its visual storytelling and the Hitchcock-like suspense mixed with a mini-Ocean’s 11-style heist factor. The cold open is one of the best in the series. Ving Rhames finally gets a shot at a little spot to shine by showing that he is a bit of the heart of the team, while simultaneously showing his character’s technical expertise. I’m glad this movie doesn’t fall into being a sloppy romantic triangle around Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. This could really find its way getting bumped up to five stars for just the love of movies.

You can’t have a Host without a Parasite. I tried really hard to come in to this movie cold and based on the name alone I figured it would be one of the Bong science fiction movies like The Host, Okja or Snowpiecer. I didn’t realize it would be one of his straight thrillers like Mother or Memories of a Murder until I was walking up to the ticket counter and heard an old man with his grandson giving him…
