Cronenberg or no, this is one of the sharpest works of original cyberpunk (and maybe even biopunk) fiction I’ve seen in the past few years, a grisly, unnerving sci-fi horror show that presents bodies and minds as the ultimate commodities; put the right prize on the line, and consciousness itself becomes expendable. Intensely cerebral, but never in a way where it calls too much attention to itself, placing its story first and foremost and letting its audience parse out its meaning however they want to - moves surprisingly quickly for something so moody and glacial, too, and boasts some truly nauseating practical FX-heavy scares when it has to. Long live the New(er) Flesh.
