The production value is definitely of the Made for TV variety, and maybe because of that, this doesn't really capture the intense creepiness of the book. But these are some really nice performances, and I love this role for Andrew Lincoln in particular. The story frankly rips, and I was impressed all over again that Wilkie Collins wrote a book with a female protagonist 150 years ago that doesn't end with her falling in love or getting married.

This was so aggressively fine that I have almost nothing to say about it. I got briefly enraged when the action ground to a halt in act three so Ryan Reynolds could narrate a sepia-toned PBS documentary-style flashback, and we spent a lot of time laughing at how silly the Rock looks in a domino mask or any variety of hat. Otherwise I can't really summon up any feelings about this.

I love that this is what someone wanted to do when they got their hands on filmmaking technology.

I'm already bracing myself for all the filmbros who are going to proclaim this "not that scary" or complain about how Elisabeth Moss's character should have left sooner or whatever. For everyone who actually believes partner violence is a real thing that can happen to them, this is one of the scariest movies ever made. And while it depicts actual partner violence, it also creates an elegant and effective metaphor for abusive relationships: you know something is wrong but you can't see it, and you know that whatever is happening to you is invisible to everyone else.
