Yes, the monologues are a problem (they don’t feel like an artistic indulgence though, more like padding).

Yes, the ending badly lets down everything that came before (this is a Flanagan joint, after all).

Yes, this is essentially a Stephen King LARP (this is a Flanagan joint, after all).

BUT my god, this guy is building one hell of a body of work, and I’d take a million of these personal, ambitious, moody, chaotic messes over a single overdetermined A24 “prestige” horror movie any day.

    The Matrix Resurrections

    Good:
    -The zombie sequence
    -Jonathon Groff
    -Keanu’s twitchy face
-The meta stuff (insofar as it’s expressed through the plot)

    Bad
-The meta stuff (insofar as it’s expressed through dialogue)
    -Neil Patrick Harris
-The inevitable Wachowski surrender to mawkishness
    -The overall look

    Ugly:
    -The fights are HORRIBLE

Overall, typical Wachowski. Some brilliant ideas, some questionable execution, if the whole thing had been pushed just a little bit farther and thought through with a little more discipline… wowza.

BUT, the most defiant piece of nostalgia since the third season of Twin Peaks.
