Ralph Gillis’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Favourite (2018)
This review was requested and many people told me to watch this movie ASAP so I did and yes it's good but not as remarkable as I thought it would be.
The Favourite is Yorgos Lanthimos's biggest film to date, production-wise. The performances are incredible and every character has a weird sense of humour which is recurrent with this director. I'm the type of person who does not enjoy period pieces though because of the rather simplistic story and amusing characters. There's nothing really bad about this movie though it is more a matter of taste. I felt more invested and interested in his previous work. I wasn't very connected to the character or the story in the beginning though I thought it gradually became more and more interesting. By the end, I was feeling a mixture of emotions both of happiness and confusion.
Overall this is a great film and deserves all the praise it's receiving though I did not connect to it as much as I wanted to.
