The lack of jokes bummed me out. Pitch Perfect 2 vibes in a bad way. Dan Stevens and some good-enough (if not funny, not that it's trying to be?) musical pastiche carried the whole thing.

When you're a kid and you stumble across an old black and white crime movie on TCM or whatever all the dialogue sounds ABOUT as nonsensical as this and these old decades and old craggy men with their old slang are just a grownup-world you assume you'll be boring enough to understand someday but really it's all zoboomafoos in zoot suits. nonono i did not like it one bit. as satirically insightful about AmErIcA as 3 billabongs which is to say.. nononono (except for you annette you're perfect annette). would've hit different if i saw it as a teen tho i can tell you that.
