MASH is one of the meanest movies I've ever seen...and I love it. While I can absolutely understand being put off by a lot of content in the script - the sexism in particular being used as a punchline - I do think it's missing the point. Now, it is on the movie to make that point shine through. I think it does, others don't. And that's fine.

There are two things - one moment and one permeating element -…

    The Swimmer

The Swimmer is a hard one to really assess. It's both a stripped down version of the hero's journey while also a deconstruction of it in a way. It's also an allegory about suburban malaise and the disaffection of the rich (a dissection of status and all it brings). And even though there is a sunniness to it in the opening scenes, as Ned bursts through the bush into his friends' back yard to jump in their pool, he carries…

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

I would love to see the alternate universe where Halloween movies were a completely different story with wholly different characters each time out (with nods to the others, perhaps, like how the original Halloween is on TV in this one).

I think it could have happened had a) this been the second movie instead of the third or b) Michael Myers hadn't become a phenomenon.

This is a fun little movie with some excellent practical effects and a totally wackadoo…

The Last House on the Left

Effective and grimy but also sloppy in execution. Maybe to enhance the realism and despair, particularly with the bizarre tonal shifts, incongruous music selections, and irritating comic relief of the bumbling cops, but it doesn't put it all together like, say, Texas Chainsaw Massacre did.

Perhaps that's an unfair comparison to make considering TCM is one of the most celebrated horror movies of all time, but it also shows how you can do a movie on the cheap with amateur…

    Under the Silver Lake

I probably would have found this mind blowing when I was 16…thinking it unlocked some secret path to the real meaning of life. Even if that meaning is everything is meaningless and the rich control it all.

As it is...this is the worst movie I've watched in years. A bunch of tangential mumbo jumbo jibberish that is maybe connected and maybe not gets thrown in a blender in a sequence of total nonsense that undercuts any character, narrative, or thematic…

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Narratively, it feels like a six-year-old's fan fiction by way of their action figure collection. It jumps around in chaotic fashion with very little rhyme or reason. Everyone and everything is a plot device and nothing more.

And though it's relatively nonstop, it's somehow dreadfully boring.

More frustrating than all that is how it just brushes a lot of The Last Jedi aside. Regardless of your feelings about that divisive Star Wars entry, this new one feels like there was…
