Seated next to me in the cinema was a true Tarantino fan. He was about twenty years old, nerdy, visiting the theatre with his friends. He was SO into this movie, it really annoyed me. I don't think, I would have found the humor quite so stupid, hadn't he sat next to me, laughing so hard at every little thing. When Brad Pitt was about to fight Bruce Lee, he excitedly exclaimed "Oh no! He's gonna do it! Amazing!" and actually applauded when Bruce Lee got beat up.
At that point, I just had to take a closer look at the guy. To my discomfort, he looked back at me, and he was so disarmingly happy. Such an innocent, amazed, happy face. Who was I to be annoyed at his enjoyment of the movie.
So, I settled back in. I watched people driving through LA, heard a lot of music I didn't particularly care for and waited for something to happen, while all the guys in the theatre were laughing at such hilarities as ... Italian women speaking Italian. Classic. So funny.
It took a while, but in the end, stuff happened. Brad Pitt's character, whose only real backstory we know anything specific about is that he apparently killed his wife, because she annoyed him, brutally tortured and killed two young, stupid girls and a guy. Di Caprio torched one of the girls later on, while she was screaming, in pain, in his pool. The guy next to me was over the moon. So happy. A girl, repeatedly getting her face bashed in, in the most bloody way possible. He loved it. Such joy.
I felt sick.
