My first 2020 movie (damn UK release dates). my first cinema trip of the year, and it’s really going to be difficult to beat.
It’s going to be hard for me to review this movie coherently, which is a similar pattern for most of my 5 star watches. The reason is simply that I am struggling to find a fault. The acting was flawless from everyone involved; it was truly a stellar cast, and Roman was completely outstanding and gave one of the best child performances I’ve seen. The humour hit every single time, and I wasn’t expecting the movie to be as funny as it was. This balanced with the emotional elements perfectly, a great amount of each. You’ve got to commend a movie that tackles such an extreme and vile subject, yet manages to make a hilarious, heartwarming film. Taika Waititi is such a fabulous Director, and his acting is also brilliant. You can tell that he had such a clear direction in which he wanted the movie to take, and I think he achieved it perfectly. The scenes with him and Roman were some of the best in the movie, and made me smile from ear to ear. The soundtrack was captivating, the cinematography was strong (particularly the framing) and the writing was completely genius in both the script and storyline. There are so many hidden messages and metaphors within the filmmaking, and I already can’t wait to rewatch and see what else I can discover.
