Southland Tales

Southland Tales ★★★★★

If there was a film that defined the decade it was from to such a degree that many of its generation have a hard time accepting the satirical view on their world: it's Richard Kelly's chaotic and supremely messy polticial mindfuck "Southland Tales". Kelly takes a tongue-in-cheek approach and, not only makes fun of post-9/11 America, but, stands by it as a moment in our times where we are ultimately coming to accept our vulnerability from surprising forces. That he makes critical note on the consumerism running rampant, the media reaching heights of celebrity fashion, and how cinema itself can turn in on itself - "Southland Tales" is an overtly crowded slice of contemporary Americana that ignores all the rules of the genre form and finishes on a spiritual, emotional note.
