Monster Hunter

Monster Hunter ★★★½

Ron Pearlmans anime wig is why cinema exists.

This is a real meat and potato’s CGI fest with zero interest in world building and arduous exposition instead moving at a bullets pace with the plot loosely riffing on  Hell in the Pacific. There’s enough investment in place and and body that the action never becomes lost in CGI murk remaining coherent and visceral even as the monsters take up the screen without it ever feeling like an extended cut scene. It’s kinda impressive that it has so many potentially cringeworthy elements (gaming and anime aesthetics never translate well) but delivers a kinda sincere and fun romp whilst being respectful to its source material of a game about crafting gear and err hunting monsters whilst dressing yr cat in ridiculous costumes.

Made a v good thematic double with nomadland.
