The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★★

After finally catching up with the films of the three leading Best Actress contenders from this past year, I can clearly see why Colman won. She gets to play every conceivable emotion here, and she nails each and every one of them.

All three women in this film are interesting and three-dimensional, and that helps the movie have more of an impact than a superficial, back-stabbing chamber piece. The art direction, costumes and score are appropriately lush, and the movie is chock full of the director's signature offbeat (to say the least) touches. I just felt like it ran a little too long, and I began to lose interest by around the three-quarter mark. Also, the way it treats sex made me want to take a shower when I was finished watching it.
