Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2: Judgment Day ★★★★½

Terminator 2 is what you get when you take someone who had an incredible idea along with the desire to expand upon it, and add a hundred million dollars to their budget. T2 outdoes its predecessor in just about every way, except for the unexpected charm of the smaller, more concise first film. Once again, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are convincing and engaging. Robert Patrick is quite intimidating as the newer, badder Terminator model. The only questionable performance here is Edward Furlong, but he succeeds when the role calls for him to be an annoying punk.

James Cameron gets a fair amount of shit these days, and while I can understand some of the arguments, he still ranks among my favorite filmmakers. I don't have to say how spectacular the revolutionary special effects still are to this day, or how awe inspiring some of the action set pieces are. That chase through the LA River is a thing of beauty, as is the Cyberdyne shootout. There isn't much more I can ask of this type of movie. Especially since the story is just as solid as the sci-fi action. I believe it will stand the test of time, even when its future "Judgement Day" comes and goes in reality.
