Da 5 Bloods

Da 5 Bloods

This rules. It’s like Treasure of Sierra Madre meets Sorcerer meets Last Vegas. A film proving once and for all that even old dudes with PTSD do, indubitably, rock.

Unlike in those other swashbuckling swag-hunting forays into the heart of darkness however, Spike Lee isn’t content to look only into the darkest depths of the soul. He always gives you your money’s worth and this one slaps you across the face with the broad political relevance of these guys’ personal struggles.

All of this made possible by a frightening, heartbreaking and grief-stricken central performance from Delroy Lindo. There’s a long intense direct-to-camera shot that even Jonathan Demme would have been in awe of.
