probably a masterpiece
maybe no bonafide masterpiece but this movie is fire and David Lowery being the fucking genius he is, does it again. if you like esoteric somewhat existential coming of age character dramas, mixed with the thematic message and trope of a hero’s journey, you’ll love this shit. a fantastic Arthurian worldly visual spectacle and a perfect modern and fresh take on a classic tale you would learn in college English class. one of A24’s strongest films yet.
Interesting how even Park’s worst film is still leagues ahead of others best works, in terms of the concise thoughtful editing of this film and impressive direction here. Outside of technical aspects, Wasikowskas performance, and the signature style of Park’s films, including his love for violence and subversive narratives, the story on display here is actually quite hallow. Stoker is an unmemorable lifetime style film, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun.
