I always forget Alexandre Desplat composed a pretty evocative score for ToL that Malick mostly tossed aside. I’d say he made the right choice because I can’t imagine any modern score making me feel as small and insignificant during the creation sequence as the Lacrimosa

The 2010s best actor Oscar winners have not aged well. Even the ones I agree with wouldn’t rank in a top 10 best of the decade list. Most of the performances are fine, just not memorable and sometimes a little boring. It’s not a big deal, it just puts me at a slight disadvantage when trying to explain to randoms irl which performances are important and worth checking out

An intimate and profound straightforward family drama that finds universality in the struggle for individualism and the need to plant your own roots while exploring the specificity of the Korean immigrant experience. Humorous, sad and heartfelt, this gorgeously shot and well-acted film is a special one

Such a wonderfully compassionate, character based film that shines a beautiful, magic hour light on the many blue collar workers who have been displaced by the sprawl of corporate america. I wish my parents, aunts and uncles enjoyed lyrical, naturalistic films like this because Frances’ resourceful, caring performance is absolutely perfect and a chance for them to see a bit of themselves and their struggles up on-screen. Guess I’ll have to settle for telling them ‘that one was for you’ when she wins her third Oscar
