In Jonas Mekas's documentary, Notes on an American Film Director at Work, Martin Scorsese is shown in candid conversation with Mekas, lamenting that Play Dirty has received too low a star rating from his cable provider's onscreen guide. Having now seen André De Toth's Play Dirty for myself, I'm glad I have somewhere to register my five star rating, even if that place is Letterboxd.com. This is one of the most gripping action pictures of its era and perhaps the most cynical war movie I've seen, which puts it in the highest ranks of all war movies I've seen.

A worthy counterpart to Paper Moon in the grifter road genre. Mackenzie Phillips is magnetic here, especially whenever the film stops down to linger on her character absorbing the weirdness of America's transient way stations. A very fine film.
