Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★★★

I think this is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Legitimately this is so fucking bad ass. John Carpenter in the late 70’s and 80’s was on the top of his game, and honestly, it’s unlike anything else I’ve seen from most other directors. Films like this show how versatile he really is too. He went from Halloween, to something like this, and after this made The Thing. Really amazing honestly. John Carpenter has always been a filmmaker I have respected and looked up to in a way, and this continues that for me. This film has this constant sense of urgency that seriously never stops. Right until the last minute. This flew by and felt like it only lasted about a half hour. Seriously, most movies wish they were as well paced as this. The cinematography here is really beautiful, as it is in most of these earlier Carpenter films. And man the musical score is so memorable and awesome. Kurt Russell is legitimately such a bad ass. I love him. He owns this role here with this seamless sense of ease. From the second he’s on screen he’s immediately captivating, as always. The set design here is also noticeably awesome. Having New York turned into this giant prison allows for a lot of great look set pieces. I loved this so damn much. And I want to watch it again already. If you haven’t seen this, do yourself a favor and do watch it. It’s awesome.
