A few notes on "Hot Topic - The Movie":
-Jim Carrey is an impassioned choice for the Joker. You'd think he'd be too old for the role, or that his obviously broken jaw would create too much mumbling, but it's amazing what they can do with CGI these days. The way he pays tribute to Heath Ledger by half-assedly copying him? Brilliant.
-Speaking of what they can do with CGI these days, it's amazing how effects are used more to obscure what's happening than to illuminate it. What a unique use of technology! Good thing the entire movie takes place at night, as far as I can remember.
-Songs! This movie loves songs more than I love songs. Super Freak, Sympathy For The Devil, Fortunate Son, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Bohemian Rhapsody, House of the Rising Sun, Seven Nation Army, Paranoid, Black Skinhead, Without Me, AND Spirit In The Sky. All these songs. Are in. This movie.
-Back on the Joker, I think it's fascinating how the whole movie tries to be about him while showing him as little as possible. It really makes me think about like, the Joker's *essence.*
-I love when the characters say the title of the movie in a really obvious way!
-This movie is like a bad salad, and character backstory is like the iceberg lettuce. The all-encompassing saving grace!
-Batman! Oh yeah! So important to this film! Hooray! The Flash too!
-The twist that they were on a mission to rescue Amanda was totally shocking and important to the plot, yet sensible.
-Captain Boomerang, man!
-Gotham City, Metropolis, and Midway City are all placeholders for New York? Incredible! What a complex world Zack Snyder is building!
-It makes total sense that you could make good crime while wearing a panda costume.
-The fact that Superman is "dead" (clearly not dead) is a perfect rationale for why Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and maybe Aquaman don't come help in the big battle against the squishyfaces.
-Those squishyfaces! Such emotive villains with such a compelling rationale!
-I could go on much longer, but I'm getting tired. The shitty-movie thing was more fun with BvS. I got annoyed with it about halfway through this one. They need to be more innovative with their shittiness. To be fair, this film does have its unique craptacular moments, but I think it could use a few more.
-Or, you know, make something good. There's also that.
