    A Hero

One of the most powerful films of 2021, A Hero intelligently dissects a societal morbidity with show-stopping drama and tension-filled sequences. Asghar Farhadi continues to prove he’s one of the most consistent filmmakers of the century as he writes and directs this film with clear precision and control, grounding the audiences on the reality that morals go beyond just black and white. The ensemble is a top-notch and you barely want to get your eyes off of them - especially the magnificent Amir Jadidi whose performance perfectly embodies a Farhadi protagonist.

Should have won Palm d’Or over Titane.

    Eternals

    ★★½

An ambitious attempt from Chloe Zhao, but her style just doesn’t work in the MCU. Although there is emotional depth, the script is a mess and the poor acting (with exception of Angelina Jolie and Bryan Tyree Henry) from the cast doesn’t help either. Tonally inconsistent, dryly shot, and a runtime that’s unnecessary long make it hard for me to generally like this film. The VFX are amazing though.

Classic Adam McKay, Don’t Look Up is an occassionally terrifying end-of-the-world dramedy that suffers from cringe-worthy writing and hysterical editing (Adam’s signature). However, like any other McKay film, Don’t Look Up uses its excellent cast as its fail-safe - so, despite the flaws, the film still manages to be entertaining, engaging, and emotionally moving.

The script is jarringly executed, but Lauren Hadaway still manages to create an exhilarating and truly remarkable film thanks to a score that rises and falls like the rowing rhythm and Isabelle Fuhrman’s gripping, fully committed, and brilliantly textured performance.
