The Fog

The Fog ★★★★★

a lot of people criticize the first act for being "too slow," but i think it's perfect. a seriously hypnotizing mood piece that gradually, over the course of 90 minutes, it descends into a vengeful chaos. carpenter's haunting score and stagnant direction force us to stare directly into the fog, but he knows as well as we do that we can't quite make anything out. silhouettes peering through the fog and a knock at the door become an apocalyptic threat. this is my favorite of carpenter's films, and i see myself rewatching as soon as i can. not often i find something as mesmerizing as this.
