Scarlett Worthington’s review published on Letterboxd:
“You know what I don’t understand? I don’t understand why people, why every fucking person is so bad to each other so fucking often, it doesn’t make sense to me.”
The freedom and simple beauty is just too good to pass up...
A heart-warming eye opening film that made me have one of the deepest yearnings for a sense of freedom I have ever felt, the fact it’s a true story makes those feelings even stronger. It’s a film that reminds about how life is really worth living when you make the choices you want to make and live the life you want to live. Just because you may not want to abandon your entire life and go out to Alaska, surviving on your own, doesn’t mean this movie won’t speak to you. What this movie says is that if you are not content with the way you are living then you should make a change. Money worries, family worries, job worries, relationships worries all those mundane things don’t have to keep you tied down. If you allow yourself to let those things go you can be free in whatever way you wish. This film literally enacapusulates a lust for life and it’s just so refreshing.
Sean Penn seamlessly directs this movie which flows in the most natural way, it feels almost like a scrapbook or an artists journal, with the effects and voiceover. All the choices create create this real personal ambiance that makes the film have a profound resonating ability as well as being just a straight up interesting and engaging story. I usually don’t hone in on performances because I often think they do speak for themselves and although Emile Hirsch has received a lot of praise for this movie I still don’t think it’s enough because what that man does in this film is absolutely amazing. He goes through such a range of emotion yet he captures this untameable sense of happiness in his freedom and it manages to remain infectious even though we are viewing his character through a tightly controlled lens. He is so amazing in this role and it really struck a nerve with me, hats off to you my guy, I will be watching what you do more closely from now on.
Lives up to the hype.
