Scott Bailey’s review published on Letterboxd:
"Oh, I'm not gonna kill you... I'm just gonna hurt you really, really bad"
Remember how cool it was when the Joker said that in the trailer? Sadly this would turn out to be a metaphor for my experience watching this disaster. This one hurt really, really badly.
Suicide Squad boasts a great cast and that is the one positive for me in this film, Viola Davis is fantastic as the manipulative Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie is a dream Harley Quinn, Will Smith adds personality to his role as Deadshot. There's not much to complain about with the cast, so why the half star?
I'm afraid that's where the positivity ends, the way this film is edited, the distinct lack of plot, the way the action is filmed, the crappy looking CGI villain, just about everything in this film is a handbook on how not to make a film. It's basically like if you mixed Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy together, but added absolutely none of the charm. Right from the start watching those awful flashback scenes which introduced us to all the characters, I knew I made a huge mistake buying tickets to this trainwreck. Although the fast editing works extremely well in the trailer, its headache inducing when the entire movie is shot like that.
I wanted to love this movie so badly, and I enjoyed Batman v Superman despite the overwhelmingly poor reviews for it. I wanted to be the one person to say the same thing about Suicide Squad, but I just can't. I adore DC Comics, I love these characters and if these actors are part of future movies, I hope they are utilised better because they are given very little to work with, especially Jared Leto as The Joker, who is hardly in it and has nothing in this that really stood out for me.
Given it's Academy Award win for one of the few things this movie didn't suck at, I guess I should mention the make up and hair styling is pretty good so good job.
As awesome as it is that James Gunn is directing the sequel that surely will be much better than this film, but I just can't help but feel it would be better if DCEU hit the reset button rather than associate it with this trash! Saying that, nobody will have to remember the plot for this because there wasn't one :)
