A killer. So many great touches here: The narration as imagined confession, the framing scene that adds so much significance once we circle back to it, and just the passion with which these two throw themselves into an affair that they know is not sustainable.

Maybe PTA's best film? Or maybe just the one I find most personally enchanting. Anderson invests so much of himself in this story of an obsessive and temperamental artist whose routines require even love to be folded neatly into them. For Alma to go from passive muse to equal partner requires so much effort on her part-- and so much discomfort on his-- yet it's enriching in ways he could never have anticipated. And perhaps more lasting than his presence in a fickle marketplace.

Also, this film is funny as hell. For Lesley Manville to lose the Oscar to Allison Janney is a crime.

"I don't have to talk to you either, man. See how you like it. Just total fucking silence. Two can play at that game, smart guy. We'll just see how you like it. Total silence."

It's going to take me a long time to sort this one out. Easily Kaufman's least accessible film, but unmistakably the work of a filmmaker who has been singularly creative in finding ways to express interiority on screen. References abound to Wordsworth, Pauline Kael, David Foster Wallace, etc., but I'll cherish the bit about Forget Paris.
